Police have cordoned off an area with apparent burn damage following a fire at a recreation ground.

An area of woodland in the corner of Carterton Recreation Ground has been taped off.

Emergency services were called just before 8pm on Saturday, March 31 to reports of a portacabin on fire.

An eyewitness told the Oxford Mail there was still a police presence on the adjacent Arkell Avenue and Lawton Avenue the next morning.

A 16-year-old boy from Carterton has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

An investigation is ongoing.

Simon Garwood, Chief Officer/Town Clerk on Carterton Town Council said that contrary to information given by the police the fire did not take place on the rec but on private land.

"However, access to the resident’s property was gained from the rec through a broken fence panel and as such that corner of the rec remains cordoned off by the police.

"The broken fence panel has since been fixed.

"I met with the resident on Wednesday and advised her that the council will be liaising with other agencies to see what we can do about making the area more secure."
