A CONVICTED sex offender appeared in court a day after his 58th birthday after looking at further images of extreme pornography.

Gwyn Jones was first sentenced in 2017 after being caught looking at more than 16,800 indecent images of children.

The former Blenheim Palace employee was handed a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years at Oxford Crown Court.

Appearing at the same court on Monday (April 15), Judge Maria Lamb handed him a 24-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

She said: “I think your real problem lies in the fact that you think you’re above the law as if there is some rule that applies to you that you don’t have to abide by court orders.

“I hope the fact you’ve been in prison for the last four months spells it out.

"Court orders are to protect children and vulnerable people from people like you who, whether you expect it or not, have paedophilic tendencies.”

During the sentencing, it was heard that when Jones, of Glyme Close, Woodstock, was first caught in 2017 he told officers that he ‘didn’t know females performing sexual acts on animals was illegal’.

Over the years, he was checked up on by officers and in May last year it was discovered that Jones had a laptop, memory sticks and hard drives that had been undisclosed to officers.

The laptop had been encased in a homemade lead covering which the prosecution stated was in attempts to avoid it from being discovered.

Several thousands of Category C images were found across the devices as well as pages being bookmarkers, favourites, and searches being made related to indecent images of children.

Defending Jones, his barrister Christopher Pembridge said his client was first jailed in December last year for these offences and had found custody ‘difficult’.

He said: “He’s not too young and much of his life was spent in good character. It’s only in 2017 when he had these orders first imposed on him, seven years ago. He didn’t breach his suspended sentence.

“Coming to prison now and being in Bullingdon for the last four months has been very difficult for him, he said he’s sleep deprived and he’s suffered an assault - he’s living day in, day out in isolation.”

It was heard that he has also been caring for his 81-year-old mother who has been diagnosed with dementia.

Jones was also ordered to complete 60 rehabilitation activities and 120 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Lamb told the court an immediate custodial sentence would impact the care of his mother.
