Oxford’s community have been left in shock after the tragic death of a man in a house fire.

The incident occurred at around 2am on Friday as police officers and firefighters were called to a house in Franklin Road, Headington.

The force notified the public earlier that a woman and a child had both been taken to hospital and were receiving treatment. The woman was released from hospital Friday.

A police cordon was in place from the early hours of the morning throughout the day as firefighters continued to tackle the blaze and smoke continued to billow.

Forensics teams were also sighted at the location as investigations into the incident were carried out.

The fire has come as a shock to neighbours in the street who describe Franklin Road as a quiet and residential place.

One Franklin Road resident spoke to the Oxford Mail anonymously about how they had never witnessed anything like the blaze before on the street.

“The fire started in the middle of the night and smoke has been billowing out,” they said.

“There were a lot of loud sounds and the emergency services on scene as we are talking about a major incident with lots of lights and lots of noise.

“We’ve been here for decades and we have never seen anything like this, it is totally exceptional.

“This is a very calm and residential area which is very settled  so goodness knows what has happened there.”

County Councillor for Headington & Quarry Roz Smith reacted to the news and believed it came as a shock for the quiet area.

“It is tragic news whenever you hear about a house fire because it affects so many people,” she said.

“My condolences to the family and friends and I have already seen a lot of reaction on local social media giving a lot of sympathy to the family.

“It is a very difficult time and I think most neighbours are in shock as it is a lovely residential road in Headington.

“The police and fire service, in my understanding, are still determining the root cause of the fire.”

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "One person has tragically died following a residential fire at a property in Franklin Road, Headington, in the early hours of this morning.

“We responded, alongside Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (Official) and South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust to reports of a large house fire at just after 1.45am today.

“The fire has now been extinguished, but tragically, one person, a man aged in his sixties, has died in the fire and two others have been injured.”

A spokesperson for the fire service added: “By way of update, one fire engine is now being removed from the scene, one will remain.

“A fire investigation is now underway.”
