Concerns have been raised over the removal of crash barriers from a main road in Bicester.

The crash barriers on Oxford Road near the park and ride have been removed after a safety audit review, Oxfordshire County Council have said.

The recommendation to remove the crash barriers was carried out with it being council policy to remove "redundant or obsolete safety barriers to reduce long-term maintenance costs".

However, there has been unease from locals who use the path near the main road about the removal of the crash barriers.

Bicester resident, Janet Hoodless said: “My main concerns are that path is only like a metre or more from the road edge where traffic is going along at high speeds.

“I’m in my 60s and have to use a walker if I were to trip and fall over I would be on the edge of the road.

“My neighbour who is registered blind with limited vision uses the path to walk his dog which is also not good for him either.”

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson said: “As part of a vehicle restraint system (VRS) upgrade review, a safety audit concluded that this VRS was not required and was therefore recommended for removal.

“It is our policy to remove redundant or obsolete safety barriers to reduce long-term maintenance costs.”
