You could be forgiven for thinking pupils at Abingdon's Fitzharrys School had seriously outgrown their chairs.

But the display is all part of the school's latest art installation, entitled Small Chair Field, inspired by Antony Gormley's Field.

The work, which all art pupils from Year Nine through to sixth-formers have contributed to, features about 1,000 small chairs.

Head of art Nick Austin said: "There are chairs which light up, move, are knitted, made of foam, sweets, in tanks, on acetate, wire and wax. Chairs have been inspired by Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Gormley."

A soundtrack recorded by music pupils accompanies the installation, which first went on display during a school open evening last week. Later in the year the installation will travel to Abingdon's John Mason School, where more chairs will be added to it and it will go on display in the school's 06 Gallery.
