There was never a dull moment when children in St Ebbe’s, Oxford, came out to play.
Bows and arrows, hop scotch, tig, tennis with battered rackets, roller skating – you name it, the youngsters of the Friars did it.
These pictures were published in the Oxford Mail in 1956 to show how resourceful the children were.
They were enjoying their Easter holiday from school, and the article was critical that they were being forced to play in the streets. The Mail commented: “Although the children in these pictures are on holiday, the playground at St Ebbe’s School remains empty until term starts.
“Why not take children off the streets by letting them use the playground?“
