More than 100 staff from Oxford City Council have been out working to clear the snow in Oxford today.

Staff from the City Works department started working at 4.30am and have been clearing snow on footpaths and roads in areas including Barton and Wolvercote.

Some staff who were on holiday have also joined the team of highways, refuse and street cleaning staff to salt the streets.

Colin Bailey, head of City Works, said: “The whole team has pulled together and we're working hard to clear the streets of snow.

“We have had staff out from 4.30am and as the morning has gone on we have had more staff join in the effort.

”We now have about 100 staff helping with clearing the snow, and there are about 30 people dealing with the city centre.

“This work will carry on through the day and we will be regularly monitoring the situation.”

John Tanner, the council's executive member for a cleaner, greener Oxford, said: “We should all be very proud of the tremendous effort by the team to deal with the snow and ice in Oxford.

“The city council is committed to keeping Oxford moving and safe in these very snowy conditions. I take my hat off to our employees.”

There will be no waste or recycling collections in the city today, because of the weather conditions, which have closed disposal facilities.

Garden waste collections will be suspended tomorrow to release extra vehicles to help with waste and recycling collections.

  • Waste collection services in west Oxfordshire are also running behind schedule because of this week's wintry weather.

The district council is trying to catch up on missed collections, after it suspended rounds due to dangerous road conditions on Monday. It is hoped to get back on schedule by the weekend.

Anyone whose collection was missed is being asked to leave bins and recycling boxes out until crews have been around their area.

  • Cherwell District Council has also suspended refuse collections today. They will resume tomorrow, weather permitting, but may be delayed until next week if there is more heavy snow.

Today's collections will now be carried out tomorrow and on Saturday. Householders are asked to leave bins and boxes outside until thay are emptied.

Garden (brown bin) collections have been cancelled today and tomorrow

  • Collections in the Vale of White Horse have been suspended and a decision will be taken tomorrow as to when rounds will resume. In south Oxfordshire, collections have been suspended in a number of areas today. Normal services will be resumed as soon as possible
