HUNDREDS of people made clear their opposition to a planned waste incinerator in Sutton Courtenay by forming a human ‘NO’ at Wittenham Clumps, above.
The protest marked the start of a three-week public consultation on Oxfordshire County Council’s plans.
The council wants to build an incinerator at Sutton Courtenay or Ardley, near Bicester, capable of burning 300,000 tonnes of household rubbish a year.
More than 500 people turned out yesterday at the beauty spot to protest against the proposal.
Campaigner Peter Greenland, of High Street, Long Wittenham, said: “We chose Wittenham Clumps because it’s the trademark of Wittenham, and it’s of special scientific interest and could be affected by pollution.
“It was a massive success, in spite of the rain and wind. Everyone was determined to get up there and produce the big ‘No’.”
Members of action groups Sutton Courtenay Against Incineration (SCAI) and Wittenhams Against Incineration (WITAI) organised the event, which also attracted support from Dorchester, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Didcot and Appleford.
Oxfordshire County Council said everyone was welcome to take part in the consultation. It also said it would be carrying out a health protection survey.
