Sir – The brilliant ideas submitted by your correspondents regarding ‘trams for Oxford’ persuade me (as a partially qualified tram-driver) to suggest two further proposals, both of which have been tested and tried by military and civil authorities.
The first is to adopt the Brennan Monorail Car, tested but not adopted by the army in about 1914. Running on a simple, single rail, it was self-powered and did not need any electrical supply.
It could save much space in the narrow streets of our beautiful city.
The second proposal is to build a second ‘Schwebebahn’, the steel-arch suspended monorail train system of the twin cities of Barmen and Elberfeld in Germany. In use for decades, it has recently been updated with new trains. There built over the River Wupper, here in Oxford it could transport passengers between the station, St Aldates, The Plain and out towards Cowley and Blackbird Leys. Sir, all is available to lucky Oxford citizens.
