OXFORDSHIRE County Council leader Keith Mitchell has asked for his expenses to be re-examined after anomalies appeared over how much he was paid.

Mr Mitchell has published the details of his expenses claims over the past four years on his website.

But when the Oxford Mail investigated Mr Mitchell’s expenses posted on krmcbe.co.uk, there appeared to be a discrepancy between the amount he said he claimed and the figures the council published.

In 2008/09 Mr Mitchell stated on his website he claimed £5,989.38 in expenses but was in fact reimbursed £6,062.27.

In 2005/06 he said he claimed £9,535, but he received £10,060.22.

Mr Mitchell, the Conservative councillor for Bloxham, said in 2007/08 he claimed £9,417.10 – but the council said he received £9,318.30, while in 2006/07 he stated he claimed £9,240.58 but county records show £8,851.63.

Council officers say that the discrepancy is likely to have happened because the authority calculates annual expenses from March 1 to February 28 while Mr Mitchell has worked out his annual claims from April 1 to March 31.

Mr Mitchell said: “I do not believe I have been overpaid but in these times of extra public vigilance on the expenses claims of public figures I have asked for this to be fully checked out.”

A council spokesman said expenses would be easier to follow when they were published online monthly.
