UKIP’s John Maden writes (Oxford Mail letters, May 25) that out- of-control immigration is a subject not debated as it should be in the House of Commons.

If it was debated properly in the first place, we wouldn’t now be in the predicament of needing to build thousands of homes in Oxfordshire.

And why wasn’t it debated? Because politicians of all parties have never listened to the wishes of the general public.

In their arrogance and isolation, they weren’t going to brook any interference in pursuing an open borders policy.

Any doubts raised by the electorate that mass immigration was being implemented far too quickly on unprepared communities was suppressed.

After all, why should those MPs bother? Those thousands of homes are never likely to ruin the views from their spacious leafy townhouses or comfortable country retreats.

But now, at last, with the expenses scandal, the fatal disconnect between how they live compared to the rest of us has been exposed for all to see. Now they can’t run and hide. Immigration will have to be debated and dicussed without fear of offending minorities.

After all these years of a tactical silence on the subject, what a novelty that would be.
