A BOY is in a serious condition in hospital tonight after a collision with a car in Oxford.

Police closed the junction of Abingdon Road and Weirs Lane for almost five hours after the 11-year-old was hurt at about 12.45pm.

The youngster was on his bicycle when he and a silver Volkswagen Sharan people carrier collided.

He was cycling with two other boys at the time. No-one else was injured.

The boy was slipping in and out of consciousness at the scene and was taken by ambulance to hospital with serious head injuries which last night were not believed to be life-threatening.

One witness said: “I heard a screech and came out of my house. The boy had hit the windscreen of the car. His bike had gone flying up in the air apparently.”

Police reopened Abingdon Road shortly after 5pm, which had experienced tailbacks and also affected Donnington Bridge Road throughout the afternoon.

Anyone with information should call police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
