JOHN Webster, former patient services manager at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, has died, aged 86.

Born in Cheltenham, Mr Webster moved to Yarnton in 1957 after serving with the Royal Corps of Signals in Normandy, India and Japan during the Second World War.

He worked at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre as a hospital administrator, later working as the manager covering cottage hospitals throughout the county as well as administrative positions at the Radcliffe Infirmary, ending his career as JR patient services manager.

After retirement, he continued to support the NHS, working as a volunteer in numerous posts in the health service.

His son, Colin, who lives in Abingdon, said his father was also a keen sportsman, playing in his younger days as a ‘quirky’ leg-break bowler.

He also played league table tennis, winning several singles titles in the Oxford and District league.

He also enjoyed cricket, rugby and football.

He leaves two sons and their families.
