OXFORDSHIRE County Council’s aim to even out the financial playing fields between schools is admirable, but fraught with danger.

It has seen there are schools with collectively £14m in surpluses in their accounts (against Government guidelines) and is now considering if this would not be better used to help schools with deficits.

The problem is some of this cash is earmarked for planned capital projects which stretch over a few years.

And surely all you would be doing is teaching schools that being responsible with their cash is ultimately not profitable.
