Sir – I liked the photographic portrait of Colin Dexter (part of the My Ashmolean, My Museum exhibition) with Latimer’s famous words on his way to be burnt at the stake written on Dexter’s forehead: “. . . we shall this day, by God’s grace, light such a tourch in England as will never be put out”.
What a shame torch was misspelt as “tourch”. I know the quotation well after hearing the Oxford Story commentary many times with my small daughter (how sad that it had to close). But, according to this commentary, the word was not “torch” but “candle” which seems to sit better with the rhythm and poetry of the piece.
