A MEETING is being held tomorrow which will decide the fate of a college’s stalled redevelopment plans.

The revised £9m project to rebuild parts of Abingdon and Witney College is due to go before the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) tomorrow morning.

Although the Government body is no longer financing the scheme the Witney campus still needs LSC approval for any building work.

The college was told in June by the LSC that it could not fund the redevelopment at Witney’s Welch Way campus.

The college’s revised plans for a smaller scheme will now be financed with a bank loan.

Steve Billcliffe, the college’s director of devopment, said: “We were hoping for a big grant for £30m, but that was turned down earlier in the year because the LSC ran out of money.

“The meeting is to appraise them of our proposals to go it alone.

“It’s going to be a smaller project, but we have to consult with the LSC officers even if they don’t provide the money.

“We need the support of the civil servants, for them to rubber-stamp our strategy — it’s another step in the journey. We are not asking for money, but we need their blessing.”

The college also wants to buy the 57 temporary buildings it has, which cost £40,000 a month to rent, so even more space is created.

It is hoped existing planning permission can be amended to fit the new proposal, which governors will consider on Saturday, December 12.

Eileen Cooper, 83, who lives in nearby Holloway Road with son Rodney, 47, said: “We were hoping the college would be half-done by now. We hope they find the money.”

If all goes to plan, building work could be completed by September 2011.
