Christmas lights and illuminated statues have helped launch the festive season on an Oxford estate.

For the fifth year running, Pete Bonney and wife Carol Ann have transformed their home and garden in Nuffield Road, Wood Farm, installing giant snowmen, a nativity scene and hundreds of Christmas lights.

Neighbours turned out in force on Monday night to see Oxford’s Lord Mayor, Mary Clarkson, switch on the display, which aims to raise awareness of homelessness in the city.

Mr Bonney, 70, said last night that the display helps bring a bit of happiness to the community.

He added: “We have now done it for five years and it is seems to get more popular each time.

“It takes us three days to get ready, but it is worth it.

“This year all of our lights and figures can be operated from just five remote controls, which is great for us because it makes life much easier than before.

“As always, we will have them lit up until January so hopefully they should spread a lot of cheer.”

An illuminated silver Christmas tree, seven-foot snowman and seven foot ‘tigger’ are the stars of this year’s show.

Mr Bonney said: “We try and do something a little bit different every year, but some people may recognise some of the items from other displays.

“We look forward to doing it because we know the lights are appreciated by lots of people.”

Hundreds of people from the city and further afield head to the house each year to catch a glimpse of the display.

Mr Bonney said the couple hope to help homeless people in Oxford, having experienced it themselves 40 years ago, when they lived on the streets for nine months.

Visitors are encouraged to leave food, hats, scarves and blankets in boxes at the house, which will be distributed to people living on the city’s streets. They do not accept money.

Mr Bonney said: “We support these people all year long because we feel it so important.

“Some of the guys on the street have nothing at all, yet still get turned down for help.

“That is why it is so important for us to donate clothes and food.”

The Gap, in Park End Street, is one charity supported by the couple.

Manager Dawn Thompson said: “Pete and Carol Ann are absolutely fantastic.

“Their donations are vital to us, and help the centre continue to offer a range of services.

“I want to thank them again for their hard work in helping to raise awareness of homelessness in the city.”
