A mixed art and craft exhibition is on show in the delightful upper gallery of the Witney Museum, Gloucester Court Mews, High Street, Witney, until November 15.

Wood turners from West Oxon Woodturning Association, based at Brize Norton, are showing some splendid examples of their craft, many of which will make ideal Christmas gifts.

The woods they have used to turn dishes, bowls, boxes, platters and vases include ash, yew, walnut, splated beech and maple. The wooden egg created from laburnum is a particularly fascinating example of their skills, as it exposes five different eggs one inside the other, with a small ebony egg in the centre.

Joan Marsh’s felt work is a fine example of this ancient craft, which shows that a modern twist can be given to this process to create stylish two-dimensional pictures of great worth. Her blue Orifice (pictured) is delightful. The wall hanging Fellscape is well worth mentioning too.

Isobel Spencer, who rates as one of Oxfordshire’s most skilled calligraphers, has submitted several very lovely pictures, which marry words and flowers.

Jeanette Cayley’s paintings are mostly watercolour, but a couple, Wychwood Harvest and The Allotments, have been painted boldly in acrylic. Cat lovers will adore The Open Door, which depicts a garden as seen from inside the house, and the family cat that is marching purposefully into view.

Jackie Hopkins’ four atmospheric watercolours, are certainly worth a second look, and for those who admire the classic colours of an icon, Siobhan Fraser’s work is on display. She is showing 11 pictures, including one of St George and the Crusader Saints. June King is showing some colourful pieces of stained glass work ,and Florence cross from the Guild of Straw Craftsmen is showing what a versatile material straw can be in the hands of an expert.
