HOUSEHOLDERS have been invited to help shape a multi-million pound revamp of Oxford University’s Iffley Road Sports Centre.
The university plans to overhaul the centre, which surrounds the famous running track where, in 1954, Sir Roger Bannister ran the first sub-four minute mile, in order to improve facilities for students and the general public.
No official budget has been set for the scheme, but it is likely to cost in excess of £19m.
The university revealed the existing grandstand would be replaced with a new joint stand and cricket school. There would also be a projectile room for rifle, pistol and archery clubs.
The scheme would also see a climbing wall, two sports halls, a dedicated fencing room, a martial arts training area, sports studios, a heavy weights room and an extended cafe area constructed.
The centre’s indoor rowing tank, swimming pool and running track would be unaffected.
University sport director Jon Roycroft invited local residents to attend a consultation event, and said: “It will be an absolute transformation and will revolutionise the available space.
“The existing sports hall faces away from the track but the new, elongated facility will frame the running track and look out over what is still one of the most famous and iconic sporting venues in world history.”
A first phase of consultation on the university’s proposals will be held at the Oxford University Rugby Club Pavilion, off Iffley Road, between 2pm and 8pm next Thursday.
