THE Oxford Mail’s annual Christmas film festival for the over-sixties got off to a cracking start today with pensioners queueing to see the hit comedy Calendar Girls.

Run with the Phoenix Picturehouse cinema in Walton Street, Oxford, the three-day event aims to bring a little yuletide cheer to the city’s older cinemagoers – which is why every film is screened at 11.00am, so no one has to worry about travelling to, or from, the cinema in the dark.

There’s free mince pies and hot chocolate and all for just the cost of your favourite local paper (40p).

Phoenix manager Suzy Sheriff said: “It was a lovely film on a bitterly cold day. And the mince pies went down very nicely.”

Tomorrow's film is The Young Victoria in which actress Emily Blunt gives a stunning performance as the young queen who falls for Prince Albert. Thursday's features the romantic comedy Last Chance Harvey starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson.
