CCTV cameras were switched on at an Oxford estate for the first time today.
The two cameras, in Blackbird Leys Road, Blackbird Leys, and Dunnock Way, Greater Leys, cost £26,000 and are able to rotate 360 degrees.
Hundreds of residents called for CCTV cameras to be installed in a survey earlier this year.
Unveiling the CCTV cameras, Saj Malik, Oxford City Council’s board member for safer communities, who lives in Greater Leys, said: “These cameras will help to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour and improve community safety in Blackbird Leys.”
The cameras were funded by Oxford City Council and Oxford Safer Communities Partnership. The two organisations have also paid for CCTV in the city centre, Cowley Road, Barton, Wood Farm and Rose Hill.
Pictures from the cameras are sent to a 24-hour control centre at St Aldate’s Police Station.
