When Ofsted inspectors visited Headington’s Foundation Stage last year, they returned a verdict of ‘outstanding’, concluding: ‘The quality and standard of the nursery education is outstanding. Staff sensitively encourage all children to become confident and happy learners, prepared to try out new experiences and activities. As a result, achievement is outstanding and progress in all the areas of learning is exceptional.”

Headington’s 16-place nursery is now more flexible in its approach than ever before, welcoming girls aged three and upwards.

Our new approach means that your daughter can start her school life at the pace that is right for her.

The nursery day has been carefully structured to help our youngest pupils learn and develop at their own individual pace, with plenty of individual attention for everyone from the class teacher and full-time teaching assistant.

Morning sessions gradually set in place the building blocks that will form the foundations of reading, writing and numeracy, while afternoons may include free-flow sessions with plenty of opportunities to develop socially and emotionally through interaction with others.

Girls benefit from experiencing a nursery that is part of our larger school community.

Life in the nursery is about developing friendships, growing in confidence, playing, and having fun.

In order to benefit from the broad and balanced education that we offer, we ask that all of our nursery pupils join us for a minimum of three regular mornings or two full days each week, but the exact combination of days (8.30am–3.30pm) and mornings (8.30am–12.45pm including lunch) is up to you.

Girls can join the nursery from the beginning of the half term following their third birthday, and will move up to pre-kindergarten with other girls in their academic year in the September following their fourth birthday.

If your daughter’s birthday is early in the academic year (e.g. in September or October), you can choose when you would like her to start.

She may spend up to five terms in the nursery, but whether she is with us for three, four or five terms, our rolling programme of fun topics and our emphasis on individual tuition and small group work will ensure that her time with us is stimulating, inspiring, and will leave her well prepared for the next stage in her school career.

The nursery forms part of the school’s Foundation Stage. Housed with the kindergarten in a purposebuilt block surrounded by its own secure play area and colourful ‘pencil fence’, it offers a happy and safe environment for our youngest pupils.

Open afternoons take place every term at Headington Prep — we would be delighted to welcome you and your daughter to our next event, so that you can see our school for yourself.
