A woman who drove ambulances for the Army after the First World War has reached her 100th birthday.
Rose Slater celebrated her centenary on Monday surrounded by flowers and telegrams, including one from the Queen.
Fellow residents and staff at Witan House home for the elderly in Moorland Road, Witney, sang Happy Birthday to the 100-year-old. She was born in Hull in 1902, one of a family of five children, and as a teenager joined the regular Army as an ambulance driver.
She married when she was 30 and went on to work in a chocolate factory.
During the Second World War, she was the manageress of a canteen at Catterick barracks in Yorkshire. Mrs Slater, who has one daughter -- Brenda Godwin -- moved to the Carterton area in 1949.
She is now the oldest of 50 residents.
Dorte Steg, home manager, said that as a younger woman Mrs Slater was very active. "She loved dancing, swimming and cycling," she said.
