Parents could get money from the county council for using washable nappies and helping protect the environment.

The council is considering incentives of up to £30 to families who stop using disposable nappies.

It believes it could make huge savings on its waste disposal budget if fewer nappies were put into household waste. Last year, it cost the council £400,000 get rid of 15,000 tonnes of disposables.

Council representatives will meet midwives, laundries and other organisations at a seminar on Tuesday to look at ways of making the scheme work.

It has not yet been decided whether the incentive will be in cash, vouchers or as a discount on laundry bills.

The scheme could take effect from April next year.

Green county councillor Craig Simmons, who proposed the scheme, said a nappy laundering service was more environmentally friendly than using disposable nappies.
