Vauxhall's leading role in the fight against car crime was boosted when the Astra range was named a winner in the motor industry's most important vehicle security honours.

The award, from the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, is in recognition of Vauxhall's continuing commitment to improving security technology, alongside Astra's outstanding car-protection arsenal.

Vauxhall has taken the honour eight times since becoming the first winner in 1987. The 2000 award is for cars in the lower medium and supermini sector.

The judging panel's chairman, Freddie Aldous, who is also president of the BVRLA and the European Car and Truck Rental Association, said: "Vauxhall's ongoing commitment to vehicle security is outstanding.

He said: "The company is sending a powerful message to other manufacturers, while demonstrating in the most emphatic manner that its slogan 'security is a right, not a privilege' is part of its ethos and not a mere advertising slogan."
