The planned merger of two Oxfordshire colleges has been called off.

The governing bodies at Rycotewood College, Thame, and North Oxfordshire College in Banbury dropped the idea after detailed studies were published.

The idea was floated last year and backed by the Further Education Funding Council.

But it has now become clear, following discussions with solicitors and accountants, that the merger would not be worthwile.

North Oxfordshire College spokesman John Hazel said: "It was decided the merger would mean too much hassle and upheaval.

"It became apparent the gain was not going to be worth the pain."
