A wheelchair-bound girl suffered nightmares after thieves ransacked her bedroom and stole her television and video.

The thieves also ate cakes that were baked by Paige Shirley, six, and her brother, Anthony, nine, with help from their mother Donna Shirley.

Miss Shirley said her daughter, who has been in a wheelchair for two years after suffering meningitis, was upset by the break-in, which took place at around midnight on Saturday while the family spent the night with Miss Shirley's parents.

The family's income support book and Paige's disability living allowance book were taken as the thieves searched the house in Pottery Piece, Greater Leys, Oxford. Miss Shirley, 26, said: "They walked past both her wheelchairs and moved one of them.

"They are lower than low. To me there's no excuse for it."

She said Paige was now afraid to be at home. "She is crying and has been having bad dreams. They have taken my sugar bowl, Weetabix, biscuits and all the cakes that my children were going to have for tea. That's disgusting - they are getting at the kids," added Miss Shirley.

Two televisions and two videos from the children's bedrooms were stolen, as well as two stereo systems and a television and video downstairs.
