By Gordon Rogers Shoppers with disabilities are being offered the chance to test-drive a new generation of electric buggies.

Called a Smart Car, the battery-powered super-buggy is under trial at the Tesco store in Marcham Road, Abingdon, And, said checkout manager Jane Lawson, it is receiving rave reviews.

She said: "The response we have received is very encouraging. Users ask our customer service desk for a key and we help them with a first driving test."

Once customers have registered at the service desk they receive a membership card which they present at their next visit.

The 4mph Smart Car costs £1,300 and is simple to use. It has forward and reverse levers and is fitted with two baskets on the front. When the car is put in reverse a bleeping noise warns other customers.

The Smart Car made its first appearance in the south of England for Tesco at Abingdon and will be provided at other stores if disabled customers approve of it.

Miss Lawson added: "We hope to have two more Smart Cars later in the year. They are so useful for our disabled customers, who think they're marvellous."
