A memorial service for Kathleen Major, principal of St Hilda's College from 1955 to 1965, was held at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.
Miss Major read modern history as an undergraduate at Oxford before going on to lecture in the study of medieval manuscripts.
Readings at the service were given by Barbara Emerson, chairman of St Hilda's Association of Senior Members, and Canon Henry Mayr-Harting, Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History.
An address about Miss Major's life was given by Mary Moore, principal of St Hilda's from 1980 to 1990.
Miss Major was influential in the celebrated campaign to fight off plans to build a relief road through Christ Church meadows.
