The search for a new town cemetery for Carterton has run into more problems.

Two sites - near Stonelands Quarry off Kilkenny Lane and off School Lane in Black Bourton - have been given the thumbs-down.

Now town councillors are being urged to bring in consultants to carry out a detailed search of the area around the town in a bid to identify a suitable site.

Carterton has the same problem as neighbouring Witney, with the existing town cemetery running out of space for further burials.

Witney, however, is close to resolving the issue, with plans for a new one at Oxford Hill on the edge of the Cogges estate.

The Environment Agency has objected to both of Carterton's proposed sites because of the risk of pollution to water courses.

County highways chiefs are also unhappy about road access.

Town clerk Janet Eustace is recommending the council to take on consultants who can liaise closely with both agencies before putting forward suitable alternative plans.
