A man who went walkabout on the M40 was restrained by police.
Police went to the Overthorpe Road bridge at Banbury after callers said a man was going to jump.
When they arrived the man scrambled down an embankment and crossed the motorway to the hard shoulder of the southbound carriage- way.
Pc Colin Robey said: "He looked as though he intended to throw himself in front of oncoming traffic.
Pc Robey went after the man on foot while PC Kevin Payne drove on to the M40 at the Banbury interchange.
Pc Robey said: "The man told me not to come close, but because of his unpredictable behaviour I waited for a chance to grab him.
"We got him into the car and it was all over in a few minutes."
The man, aged 26, of no fixed address, was taken for medical assessment.
