Retired airmen have been praised after a marathon year of fundraising.

Members of the Wantage and District Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association marked last year's 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain by raising £10,000 for their former comrades.

At the group's annual dinner dance, RAFA Secretary General Jack Hargreaves presented the branch with a framed certificate recognising the achievement.

The group raised the cash for the Battle of Britain Wings Appeal, with a series of collections throughout the Vale of White Horse.

It will be used to fund charity work, nursing and convalescent homes, and sheltered housing for serving and veteran airmen, throughout the country.

About 170 supporters, joined by the Station Commander of RAF Benson Group Capt Nigel Brewerton and Wantage mayor Jenny Hannaby packed Wantage Civic Hall for the popular event, which was held to boost the organisation's funds further.

Branch president Doug Friend, of Barwell, Wantage, said: "This is a rare award."

A raffle held during the dinner raised another 333, which will go towards the group's Christmas parcels fund.
