Banbury's pedestrian precincts will become totally traffic-free during the day if new proposals published by Cherwell District Council get the go-ahead.
The council says new restrictions are necessary because of 'significant' increases in traffic in High Street and Broad Street since the areas were first pedestrianised in 1990.
The council says the new measures will re-establish pedestrian priority in the two streets, and make the town centre a more welcoming place.
Only emergency vehicles and post office and bullion vans will be exempt if the measures become law. The new restrictions will apply from 9am to 5pm seven days a week. Cyclists will also be banned.
