Plucky eukaemia victim Luke Wemyss is getting ready to raise 10,000 for the children's ward where he has been battling against the disease.

The seven-year-old is organising a special golf tournament at Carswell Golf Club, near Faringdon, in aid of toys and equipment for ward 4B at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

Luke, who lives in Didcot with his mum April Griffiths, said: "I want to be able to buy things for the ward so that children have lots to do."

Dad Nigel, of Priory Orchard, Wantage, said: "He got a set of golf clubs for Christmas and although he's spent a lot of time in hospital, we have managed to get up to the golfing range a couple of times for some practice.

"We hope to raise 10,000 during the golf tournament and every little bit is going to help." Diagnosed with the blood cancer in February, Luke now spends a lot of time at the ward while he has chemotherapy. Luke, a pupil at Greenmere Primary School, in Didcot, is waiting to see if his chemotherapy has worked. If it is unsuccessful, a bone marrow transplant may be the only option.

The event will take place on July 19. Golfers pay 22, spectators pay 10.
