A decision on plans to turn a school hall into a part-time cinema will be known in a few weeks' time.

Bicester's new town mayor Debbie Pickford said a special meeting would be held to discuss the proposals put forward by Labour councillor Les Sibley.

Cllr Sibley, who wants to turn the performance hall at Cooper School, in Churchill Road, into a cinema, demanded a "yes or no" answer from Tory councillors at the annual meeting of the town council on Monday. A referendum called by Cllr Sibley and held last month calling for support of the cinema project was supported by 983 residents, with 185 against.

At the meeting, Cllr Sibley said: "Eighty-five per cent of the people who voted in the referendum support the idea. All I'm asking for is a yes or no answer, it's quite simple."

But Cllr Pickford said the annual meeting, which is largely ceremonial, was not the place to discuss the cinema proposal.

She said: "We will call a special meeting in due time."
