Oxford United's young players Jamie Cook (above) and Rob Folland are the latest to get new contract offers at the Manor, joining Les Robinson and Joey Beauchamp.

However, 20-year-old Cook reports that a couple of other clubs have also made contact with his agent.

United boss Denis Smith has warned fans not to expect a rush of transfer news. "It's very, very slow going," he admitted. Smith's talks with out-of-contract players, negotiations with clubs over players he would like to bring to the Manor, and attempts at persuading chairman Firoz Kassam that he needs another member of staff are all dragging on and may yet take weeks to complete.

Smith has already targeted two Premiership reserve team players as potential signings. Both are under 24 years old, so their clubs would be entitled to a fee.

However, Smith admits negotiations are still in their very early stages and he doubts whether United could afford it if it has to go to tribunal.

Lack of money is also an inhibiting factor when it comes to bringing in a No 2.

Former U's skipper Mike Ford, whose testimonial against a Manchester United XI at the Manor last week drew in 6,000 spectators, is completing his 'A' coaching licence this summer and would jump at the chance to become Smith's assistant, but there are others as well. Smith saw several at the League Managers' annual dinner on Monday night, but his problem has been getting Kassam to agree to the appointment of a No 2 and to put forward enough money to bring in a coach of calibre.
