A pensioner, who attempted a failed drunken robbery at a bank, has escaped a jail term.
John Keyes, 68, was instead put on three years probation and told to do 40 hours of community service.
The pensioner, of Hockmore Tower, Cowley, appeared at Oxford Crown Court yesterday after he was convicted last month of attempting to rob the Nat West Bank in George Street, Oxford, in April.
At his trial he was cleared of two other attempted robberies at the nearby Lloyds and Barclays banks on the same day.
Keyes was not taken seriously at Lloyds and was thrown out of Barclays. Cashiers at the Nat West bank hit the panic button and dived for cover, fearing Keyes had a gun.
