Brian Talbot looked set to get the new striker he wanted after Oxford United had a £120,000 bid for Stockport County's Jermaine Easter accepted last night.

The 24-year-old former Cambridge and Boston player was deciding whether to make the move to the Kassam Stadium after discussing personal terms.

Stockport's directors held a board meeting last night before their rearranged league game against Grimsby, and agreed to accept Oxford's offer.

They had turned down an £80,000 bid from Wycombe last Friday.

However, Wycombe might not be out of the equation yet.

Wanderers boss John Gorman could be persuaded to return with a bigger offer if Easter decides he would rather move to the table-toppers rather than Oxford down in 17th place.

Talbot has been desperate to increase his team's goal power - which at 29 from 29 games is one of the poorest in League Two - and Easter has had a recent record of scoring once every two matches.

The Cardiff-born striker, who began as a trainee at Wolves, has hit 11 goals for Stockport this season - not bad in a bottom-of-the-table team.

The U's had missed out in previous attempts to sign Junior Agogo, Grant Holt and Jon Parkin, strikers who all had a proven record of getting goals in League Two.

But the 5ft 9in Easter, a pacy player, has that too, with nearly all of his 25 goals from 56 starts coming for clubs in this division.

He has also been impressive in games at the Kassam Stadium, scoring Cambridge's goal in their 2-1 defeat by Oxford in December 2004 - in Ramon Diaz's first game in charge of the U's - and also causing problems when coming off the bench for Boston last March.

He scored Stockport's winner in their 1-0 victory at Rochdale ten days ago.

If Easter completes his move, he will challenge for the places currently occupied by Eric Sabin and Steve Basham, and the United boss may consider playing all three of them.
