Jermaine Easter will not be joining Oxford United.

Although the U's had agreed a £120,000 fee with Stockport County for the striker, he decided a move to the Kassam Stadium was not for him.

United's League Two rivals Wycombe Wanderers are also in the hunt for Easter, along with Crewe and Chester, but the 24-year-old will not make his mind up until after the weekend.

Easter said: "It's not that I think Oxford are not a good club to play for, because they've got a lovely stadium and a good set-up.

"But at the moment I don't feel that Oxford is much of a step-up from Stockport.

"Stockport are struggling, but they are only nine points behind Oxford with two games in hand. It's not much of a difference.

"I'm an ambitious player and I want to do what is best for me and my family, and I just feel that Oxford is not right."

Wycombe had an £80,000 offer for the former Cambridge forward rejected last Friday, but Chairboys' boss John Gorman could return with an improved bid.

And even if they don't, there's still a chance the leaders could get their man, who is out of contract in the summer.

Stockport are desperate for money, and could accept Wycombe's bid, rather than risk losing their forward for nothing in four months' time.

Interestingly, Wycombe play Stockport on Saturday, although Easter is unlikely to figure in the match.

Meanwhile, U's winger Chris Hackett should complete his move to Hearts this morning.

He flew up to Edinburgh yesterday for his medical and will get the results later today before finalising his £20,000 move.
