Wantage town councillors are hoping for a tougher stance against drunken and yobbish behaviour.
They are calling for a meeting with Thames Valley's Acting Chief Constable Sara Thornton to voice their concerns after witnessing an incident in the town centre at the weekend.
Mayor Julia Reynolds and fellow councillors Bill Verdin and Jenny Hannaby were returning from an official function when they saw a large group in the Market Place. A fish and chip shop window was smashed when the owner decided it was time to close.
Mrs Hannaby said: "Elderly people living in the town centre are getting quite worried about this and the town council will not put up with this sort of behaviour."
The historic market town was highlighted in a national television documentary in the mid-Eighties as one of the worst places for violent drunkenness in rural England.
