World Cup fever is hitting Oxfordshire's shops, with bumper sales of football kit and flags, TV sets and a run of money at the bookies.

But a spot check by the Oxford Mail reveals that life is still going on as normal, with most of the county's village fetes and other summer events still going ahead tomorrow, despite England's first game with Paraguay at 2pm.

A spokesman for JJB Sports in Magdalen Street, Oxford, said that the shop has been selling huge quantities of England flags, football kit, hats, caps, towels and bags anything with a St George's Cross on it is flying off the shelves.

At Giles Sports in Carterton, sales have been building up steadily over the past couple of weeks, and have gained momentum with the warm weather. Training gear and replica shirts are big sellers.

The most popular names are Beckham, Lampard, and Gerrard.

Television sales have also risen in recent months, including at the Currys outlet in Oxford's Clarendon centre. Nationally, they are selling a flatscreen TV every 15 seconds.

Bookmakers have also seen a surge in business. Steven Jones from Oxford bookmaker River Racing Ltd, of Park End Street, said they have received a lot of bets on England to win. "The World Cup is certainly a great boost for us. It has attracted many first-time betters," he said.

Despite the excitement surrounding England's first World Cup match, few organisers have rescheduled their events tomorrow.

John Hampden Primary School, Thame, pushed their fete forward from 2pm to 11am.

The summer fayre of St Gregory and St Augustine's Church in Woodstock Road, Oxford, will be held at 2pm as planned, but they will show the game.

Most organisers, though, are sticking to their plans. A 2.30pm history talk at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford on Medieval Indian Trade Printed Fabrics will go ahead as planned, and village fetes will be held in Bledington, Fernham and Kennington, as will car boots and table top sales in Oxford, Wantage and Witney.

Church events also remain unchanged, and walks and other sports events will take place as planned.
