The recent volcanic events have reminded me of the 1986 Chernobyl cloud of radiation that passed over England.

The hills of North Wales were badly contaminated for years and the lamb was rendered inedible.

There is always a risk of an accident with nuclear power. Windscale and Three Mile Island are examples of places where such accidents have occurred.

When Colwyn Bay flooded a few years ago geologists found that the resulting silt was contaminated with plutonium. This could have come from Sellafield in Cumbria. Even soil near Harwell has been shown to have evidence of contamination.

Therefore, I really like the Lib Dem policy of no nuclear power.

Apart from the risk of local contamination there is also a risk of a terrorist attack. Nuclear power also has links with the arms trade.

Nuclear fission is a dirty technology. Nuclear fusion, however, is a much cleaner and safer solution, if it can be achieved.
