Many thousands of workers die every year from accidents, occupational diseases and work-related driving. Workplace injuries, ill health and death are preventable.
Today is Workers’ Memorial Day. All over the world, workers and their representatives are holding events, rallies, vigils and services to mark the event. The day also serves as a rallying cry to mourn the dead, but fight for the living.
This year, for the first time, the UK Government has officially recognised the day.
Trade unions will continue to actively campaign for proper enforcement and adequate funding for the Health and Safety Executive and a legal duty on company directors to be more accountable. Employers must put the health and safety of their workers first.
