Sir – Why is it that when someone suggests a solution to traffic congestion (or any problem for that matter) that is in the greater interests of the many, certain people are outraged at their ‘rights’ being eroded and claim that the possible solution is ‘from another universe’ or come up with a reason to oppose it that is clearly ridiculous (Letters, April 8 and 22).

So Nigel Clarke’s son cannot get from the station to his North Oxford home, with all his University belongings, without being taken by car? Presumably when he sets out, he walks to the station platform from some mode of transport, and will walk to another mode at this end (or does his father intend to drive on to the platform?) Ever heard of taxis, Mr Clarke?

As for anyone delivering to Magdalen College or Christ Church from the Covered Market (a few yards from the front entrance) by anything but bike and trailer in this day and age, well, no comment! (Though the street closures suggested by Ms Dhall, like those already in place, refer to private motorised traffic, not commercial/delivery vehicles. The Greens are not against business, just ‘business as usual’!).

There are serious problems out there on our streets and it is going to take radical solutions, many of them requiring all of us to do our bit, to overcome them. Ultimately, we all stand to benefit in the long run.
