Sir – Regarding the current debate on the site of sexual entertainment venues in Oxford, I think they should be banned altogether. Some people claim that if sexual entertainments involve mutual consent between adults, there can be no problem.

A lesson which adolescence usually teaches is that by their very nature, sexual entertainments turn people (usually women) into objects of lust; into pieces of meat designed for gratification.

This is a degradation which by its very nature is destructive for individuals and for society. On top of this you have to add the problems of coercion and corruption which are rife in the sex industry, as well as the inevitable slippery slope into darker forms of “entertainment”.

The issue is not about welcoming sex workers into churches as Robert Sephton suggests (Letters, April 22). Mary Magdalene was once a sex worker after all.

The issue is about protecting our society from a very real evil.
