Sir – Oxfordshire’s public services deserve a vote of thanks. People often moan about the NHS, social services, and the state of our schools, but I’d like to flag up some really good experiences we’ve had.

We get support from a wide range of services, as our son has the progressive muscle wasting condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Managing Duchenne involves various hospital specialists, the GP, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and a number of special educational needs support services.

While some things haven’t gone smoothly, we’ve also seen some top-quality examples of good practice: different services working together, specialists seeing our son frequently, high-quality expertise, attention to detail, people listening and working with us as parents, specialists caring about our son as an individual, services easy to get in touch with and responding quickly. And it’s all free.

Because of this kind of support, our son and thousands of other people can live life to the full and make their contribution to society. Let’s celebrate quality in public services. Let’s make sure that local hospitals and local authorities get the resources they need to provide quality public services.
