Sir – I read with interest Martin Sheldon’s letter about library volunteers (August 5). That is one possible way of reacting to the threatened cuts.

There must be others, like greatly increased donation of books by the public.

I hope that our librarians themselves will give a lead, by telling us what we as readers can do to help them support this precious service. Action is needed soon. Before long it may be too late.
