This summer The Birmingham Stage Company brings one of Roald Dahl’s best loved children’s stories, George’s Marvellous Medicine, to life at The Oxford Playhouse.
Packed with all of the original charm of Dahl’s tale, this adaptation also succeeds in keeping up with the times as George dreams of a quick game of Guitar Hero with his troublesome Grandma.
Clark Devlin’s George amuses both children and grown-ups when his rather alarming homemade medicine creates mayhem on the family farm, enlarging Grandma and several chickens to an unnatural size — a sight which is met with shrieks of laughter from the enraptured young audience. Directed with precision and wit by Phil Clark, the play provides an enjoyable and engaging experience for children as well as welcome relief for weary parents whose poorly disguised snorts of laughter did not go un-noticed.
The engaging cast, lively set design and colourful costumes have even the littlest viewers in awe of the raucous performance.
And so it is: with a dollop of well-placed humour, a splash of obligatory audience participation and a drizzle of pure magic, George’s Marvellous Medicine forms the perfect concoction, mixing up a real treat for the summer holidays.
