The vineyards of Alsace are concentrated in a narrow strip on the lower eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains at altitudes of 175-420 metres. These provide a good balance between temperature, drainage and sun exposure. This is an area of quality wine that is sadly often overlooked these days — something we hope will change. Pinot Blanc/Auxerrois, Cleebourg Tradition 2007: Elegant and floral with loads of fruit, this refreshing wine has hints of spice and makes a great partner to delicate foods and oriental cuisine.
Riesling, Georges Rupp 2007: Hints of limes on the nose and nicely poised fruit make this excellent Riesling a joy to drink —with or without food.
Pinot Gris, Cleebourg Tradition 2008: The original Pinot Grigio! Yet pinot gris from Alsace is a very different beast from that rather better known variant from Lake Garda. It’s more complex for a start and has a minerally edge combined with subtle hints of spice and a pleasingly long finish – a wine to relish rather than quaff.
Gewürztraminer, Georges Rupp 2007: A classic spicy style with flavours of rose water, damp straw and a hint of perfume, which make this wine a superb match with smoked salmon — no other white goes quite so well in my opinion — just try it and see!
