I READ with interest the letter by Paul Hughes, headed Chaotic city centre (Oxford Mail Viewpoints, August 12).

I agree with Mr Hughes’s concern on the lack of discipline not given out by students, who are supposed to be responsible for groups of foreign students while visiting our beautiful city.

Walking guides are trained to give instruction to their groups always to leave a gap behind each person, so people who are not with a group can pass by easily, and also to pass on any other mannerisms which local people are accustomed to.

This should be done at the very beginning, before one even sets out around the city. This should be passed on by the language schools or agents to all those taking charge of foreign students.

It is a pity that Mr Hughes is put off coming into Oxford until the winter months, because our beautiful city should be enjoyed at all times by people who should show thought and understanding, so that all may be enjoyed.
